Abstract

The Synod on Synodality (2021-2024) challenges the Eurocentric and colonial entanglements within the Roman Catholic Church. This qualitative study engages with the evolving paradigm of ecclesial praxis, particularly within the context of the Synod on Synodality, through a decolonial lens. Drawing upon critical theological frameworks and decolonial discourse, the research explores the paradigm shifts that characterize the Synod on Synodality within the Roman Catholic Church: from hierarchical to peripheries; from majority to minority; from exclusivism to inclusivism and pluralism; from maintenance to mission; from institution to movement. Through a nuanced analysis of the historical and systemic manifestations of coloniality within the Church, this study investigates the possibilities and challenges inherent in the process of decolonization. The interrogating power dynamics, hegemonic structures, and epistemological frameworks embedded within ecclesial structures provide pathways for implementing a synodal synthesis. Furthermore, the study proposes practical theological strategies for decentering dominant narratives and facilitating transformative praxis towards a just and inclusive Church. The findings of this research contribute to the literature on theological discourse on decolonization and synodality, offering insights and recommendations for a renewed Roman Catholic Church in a diverse and interconnected world.
