Abstract

The Philippines, a linguistic treasure trove, is home to over a hundred distinct languages. This linguistic diversity is a testament to the existence of at least 100 unique cultures, each with its own rich tapestry of traditions and customs. It’s a fascinating fact that often goes unnoticed - when we engage with speakers of different languages, we are, in essence, stepping into their unique cultural landscapes. To effectively convey our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs to individuals from diverse cultures, and to comprehend literature penned in a foreign language, such as English, we advocate for cultural exegesis. This approach employs the emic-etic perspective, catering to both the target culture and the source language. We conclude our presentation by delving into Nida and Taber’s enlightening insights on the dynamic interplay between source and receptor languages. Their perspectives serve as invaluable tools in the art of translation, enriching our understanding and enhancing our application of this intricate process.
